Mechanic Services & Car Servicing in Shrewsbury
Mobile repairs, servicing and diagnostics at your home or workplace, with pick-up and drop-off for the jobs that need a workshop. Here is each service in detail.
Mobile Mechanic at Home or Work
Most repairs and servicing don’t need a ramp. Fairmile Auto Services brings the tools, the diagnostic equipment and the parts to wherever the car is parked: your drive, the street outside or the car park at work. You carry on with your day and get the keys back when the job is done.
If you’ve searched for a mobile mechanic near me in Shrewsbury, this is what you get: Albert, an NVQ Level 3 qualified mechanic, working on your car where you can see it. He explains what he has found before he starts, and he’s happy to show you the old parts afterwards.
All we need is somewhere safe and reasonably level to work, with room to open the doors and get a jack under the car. For jobs that are too big for a driveway, we collect the car, do the work in an equipped workshop and bring it back to you.
- Your home, workplace or roadside
- Tools, diagnostics and parts brought to you
- All makes and models
- Open seven days a week
- Pick-up and drop-off for bigger jobs
- The work explained in plain English
Emergency Mobile Mechanic
Cars rarely pick a good moment to fail. If yours has let you down in or around Shrewsbury, call 07477 397009. Tell us where you are and what happened, and we’ll tell you honestly how soon we can get to you. We’re open seven days a week and offer same-day call-outs whenever the diary allows.
An emergency mobile mechanic starts with diagnosis. We plug in the diagnostic equipment, test the battery, charging and starting systems, and look for the obvious: a snapped auxiliary belt, a split coolant hose, a brake that has seized on. Many faults can be put right there and then.
If the fault needs a workshop, we’ll say so, and arrange to collect the car and return it once it’s repaired. If you’ve stopped somewhere dangerous, such as a live lane on the A5, get yourself to a safe place and call 999 or your breakdown provider first.
- Breakdowns at home, at work or at the roadside
- Open seven days a week
- Battery, starter motor and alternator faults
- Belts, hoses and coolant leaks
- Brake faults and warning lights
- Collection if it needs the workshop
Car Won’t Start? Mechanic to Your Door
A car that won’t start is the most common reason people call a mobile mechanic, and the one job where a garage is no use to you, because you can’t drive there. So the mechanic comes to the car instead.
What the car does when you turn the key tells us a lot. Rapid clicking usually means a flat or failing battery. One heavy click often points to the starter motor. An engine that turns over but won’t fire suggests fuel, ignition or a sensor. A battery that keeps going flat is often an alternator that has stopped charging it. We test rather than guess, so you only pay for the part that has actually failed.
Batteries, starter motors and alternators can usually be replaced on your drive. Recent jobs include a starter motor on a Peugeot 207 and an alternator on a Fiat Punto. If the cause turns out to be deeper, such as a timing fault, we’ll explain it and give you a price before going any further.
- Battery testing and replacement
- Starter motor replacement
- Alternator and charging faults
- Diagnostic scan for stored fault codes
- Fuel, ignition and sensor checks
- Fixed where the car is parked
Mobile Vehicle Repairs
Mobile vehicle repairs cover far more than most people expect. Brake discs and pads, clutches, suspension and coil springs, wheel bearings, CV joints and drive shafts, alternators, starter motors, and oil and coolant leaks are all jobs we carry out away from the workshop.
Every repair starts with finding the real cause. A knock over bumps could be a drop link, a top mount or a broken spring, and replacing the wrong one costs you twice. We check first, show you what we’ve found and agree the price before any parts go on.
For work that needs the engine or gearbox out, or the car in the air for a long time, we use an equipped workshop and offer pick-up and drop-off, so you still don’t have to arrange a thing.
- Brake discs and pads
- Clutch replacement
- Suspension, coil springs and wheel bearings
- CV joints and drive shafts
- Oil and coolant leak repairs
- Alternators, starter motors and batteries
Car Servicing at Your Door
Car servicing doesn’t have to mean a day without the car. We service it where it’s parked, at home or at work, using the right grade of oil and quality filters for your engine.
A service is more than an oil change. The engine oil and oil filter are replaced, the air and fuel filters are checked and changed when they’re due, and we look over the brakes, tyres, suspension, lights, fluid levels and drive belts. If something needs attention we’ll tell you what it is, how urgent it is and what it would cost. You decide what gets done.
Regular servicing matters most on modern engines with a wet timing belt, which runs inside the engine in the oil. Old or wrong-grade oil breaks the belt down. If your car has one, keeping to the oil change intervals is the cheapest protection there is. We also carry out pre-MOT checks, so there are no surprises on the day of the test.
- Engine oil and oil filter
- Air and fuel filters
- Brakes, tyres and suspension checked
- Fluid levels and drive belts checked
- Pre-MOT checks
- Fleet maintenance for business vehicles

Diagnostics & Fault Finding
A warning light tells you that something is wrong, not what. We connect professional Autel diagnostic equipment, read the fault codes and the live data behind them, and then test the part itself before anything is replaced.
That last step matters. A fault code names the circuit with the problem, and the cause could be the sensor, the wiring or something else entirely. Finding the fault properly the first time is nearly always cheaper than fitting parts until the light goes out.
We deal with engine management lights, DPF and EGR faults on diesels, AdBlue system warnings, and running problems such as misfires, loss of power and limp mode. Once the cause is found, you get it explained in plain English, with a price to put it right.
- Engine management and warning lights
- Autel diagnostic equipment
- DPF diagnostics and regeneration
- EGR and AdBlue faults
- Misfires, loss of power and limp mode
- The fault explained in plain English

Timing Belts, Wet Belts & Chains
The timing belt or chain keeps the top and bottom halves of the engine in step. If it snaps or jumps, the valves and pistons can meet, and the repair can cost more than the car is worth. Replacing it on time is one of the most valuable jobs you can have done.
Timing belts need replacing somewhere between 40,000 and 100,000 miles, depending on the engine. Wet belts, which run inside the engine in oil, need particular care: as they wear they shed material that can block the oil pick-up and starve the engine. Fairmile replaces both dry and wet belts, and specialises in Peugeot, Citroën, Renault, Ford and Vauxhall engines.
Timing chains last longer, but they do stretch. A rattle on a cold start or a timing fault code means it should be looked at before it fails. Some belt and chain jobs can be done on your drive. Others are better done in the workshop, in which case we collect the car and return it.
- Dry timing belt (cam belt) replacement
- Wet belt replacement
- Timing chain replacement
- Peugeot, Citroën, Renault, Ford and Vauxhall
- Rattles and timing fault codes investigated
- Pick-up and drop-off available

Engine Repairs & Rebuilds
Some jobs are too big for a driveway. Cylinder head gaskets, engine rebuilds and engine swaps are done in an equipped workshop, and we collect the car from you and bring it back when it’s finished.
Albert learned his trade in workshops specialising in heavy and light goods vehicles, and engine work is where that background shows. A rebuild means stripping the engine, measuring and inspecting the parts, replacing what is worn and putting it back together to the maker’s settings. The photographs on this site are from his own engine jobs.
Not every tired engine needs a rebuild. Sometimes a replacement engine is the more economical fix, and sometimes the honest answer is that the car isn’t worth it. We’ll set out the options and the costs so that you can decide.
- Cylinder head gasket replacement
- Engine rebuilds
- Engine swaps
- Turbo repairs
- Oil and coolant leaks traced and fixed
- Pick-up and drop-off
